Artist Statement
Bob began his work with clay in 1967, while studying in the School of Architecture at Cal Poly, SLO. After graduating, he established a studio in San Luis Obispo and worked for many years, producing his functional pottery and occasionally teaching at Cal Poly and Cuesta College. During this time, he developed a reputation as a fine craftsman, while teaching studio workshops throughout the western states. In 1985, the California Arts Council granted Nichols Artist-in-Residence status with the City of Santa Maria. After his three-year residency program, the Fine Arts Department at Allan Hancock College invited Nichols to teach, which he did full time until his retirement in 2017.

He now works producing functional pottery in his home-based studio in San Luis Obispo. He high fires his work with glazes that are food, oven, microwave, and dishwasher safe.
